Port of Davisville Pier V Expansion Dredging

Project Name: Green Harbor Dredging

Value: $10,500,000

Dates: 10/2024-3/2025

Client: Quonset Development Corporation

Contact: Greg Coren, PE

In the fall of 2024, after a lengthy permitting process, BAI entered into a contract with the Quonset Development Corporation to dredge approximately 250,000 CY from its Port of Davisville location in North Kingstown, RI. A new pier being constructed at the Port of Davisville required improvement dredging to deepen the primary berth from a natural depth as shallow as -5′ MLLW to a working depth of -32′ MLLW, to match the existing controlling depths at Davisville Piers 1 and 2, the creation of a secondary berth with a controlling depth of -20′, and a “Green Economy” small boat berth with a controlling depth of -8′. BAI subcontracted AGM Marine to assist in the dredging efforts, and Stasinos Marine to provide towing services for the disposal of material at the Rhode Island Sound Disposal Site, 25 miles from the project area. The work commenced in November 2024 and was completed on March 30, 2025. During the course of excavation, the scope of work expanded considerably to include the dredging of the entrance channel to the adjacent Allen Harbor and an expansion of the -32′ berth area to allow for easier approach of deep draft vessels. BAI mobilized its newest and largest clamshell dredge, the 17 CY capacity dredge CAPT TSP AUGUSTINE, to perform much of the work. Large areas of improvement material too resistive to be removed via clamshell necessitated the conversion of BAI’s dredge TRINITY into a backhoe dredge utilizing a Cat 385C L excavator to remove this incredibly resistive material. The combined efforts of both BAI’s dredges, as well as AGM’s and Stasinos Marine’s efforts, allowed this project to be completed prior to the expiration of the extended environmental window to the satisfaction of the Owner. Over 275,000 CY were removed and disposed of at the RISDS over the course of 5 months to complete this project.
